Williams County 5

twice it passes
across the Little Muddy
autumn equinox

every mile marker
in the headlights gleaming
on the thirteenth night

alone with a mirror
trying on these cowboy hats
autumn sky

dust and more drought,
so many weeks without rain
dry grass like tinder
an angus calf tumbles
on a loose strand of wire

in a river of fog
high above the coulee
prairie greets the dawn

Williams County 5
pheasant children linger
all along the road

a white-tailed buck
appears from a dust cloud
as a few leaves fall
from the only tree
for miles and miles
